A publication commissioned by Design Canada to help readers understand the emerging discipline of design management, and the financial benefits obtained by following its methodology. It uses early design problems (how to improve on the horsedrawn plough or explore the Canadian wilderness) to illustrate how a systematic approach to design can deliver a better outcome more quickly and reliably.

A stylised human head defines the space for problem solving (the brain), into which images of designed and engineered objects are placed that illustrate the narrative on the facing page (in both English and French).
