A catalogue of watercolours and drawings depicting Waterloo County by esteemed artist Woldemar Neufeld, housed in the permanent collection of Conrad Grebal College.
Neufeld began his career as a painter in what is now known as Waterloo Region, Ontario in 1924, as a 15-year-old immigrant from the Mennonite village of Waldheim, Russia (Ukraine). His family fled to Canada subsequent to the Russian Revolution. In Canada, the young Neufeld quickly embraced the towns and rural communities of his new world, intent on painting what he saw.
The cover of this publication expresses the seminal elements of Neufeld’s paintings — colour, tone and texture in a purely typographic form. It complements Neufeld’s “realistic” artist style and evokes his use of pen, ink and watercolour. Inside, the typography aligns to the bottom of the page, reinforcing the sense of landscape and place.
