The Clarke Irwin Canadian Paperback series began life in 1963, and included essays, art books, histories, autobiographies and the occasional novel or play. All the covers followed a consistent format, grid and typographic layout, and prominent designers were commissioned to create striking cover imagery.
In this case Ernst Barenscher took the idea of targets and data to illustrate the desire to better understand childhood and apply scientific rigour to educational progress. A seemingly childlike target image is simplified and clarified in one section, using the stepped form to illustrate improving standards.
