The move to metric and the International System of Units was an important part of Canada’s drive to present itself as a progressive global force. Rather than simply converting existing measures into metric equivalents, industry was  encouraged to fully embrace the new system and adopt a ‘metric-first’ approach.

This simple publication was designed to encourage companies and organizations to make full use of the Metric symbol. It introduces the symbol and the variants thereof, makes the case for its widespread adoption and provides simple guidelines for usage. The symbol itself is constructed in a series of steps across the main internal spread, reflecting the desire to make the process of conversion as simple and frictionless as possible.
