Posters played an important role in the image the Olympic Games and the Graphics and Design Directorate of COJO (Montréal Olympic Organizing Committee) developed two main series of posters — 8 ‘thematic designs’ and 21 ‘sports’ designs, each part of the program of the games.

This poster, designed by Ernst Roch and Rolf Harder, is known as ‘The Invitation’. Of the eight thematic posters produced it is without doubt one of around three which are most commonly associated with the games. The thinking behind the design is that the five Olympic rings (in all their official colours) resound symbolically in successive waves, inviting athletes from all continents across the world to the games.
