In 1976, the TD Bank were the first financial institution in Canada to pilot the automated teller machine (ATM), initially known as ‘TD 360’. This initial pilot proved positive and the roll-out began, along with a more consumer friendly name, ‘The Green Machine’ (referencing the bank notes it delivers). The name is still in use to this day, and to date the TD has more than 2,800 ATMs across the country (at time of writing).
This badge was presumably given out as a form of marketing merchandise by TD to promote the service to its customers and potential new ones. It is very simple in nature and displays The Green Machine logo, itself a lovely bit of typography. Created with a customized Helvetica composition, incorporating a special signature g/$ ligature/glyph at the start of ‘green’ and before ‘machine’ — further reinforcing the bank notes the machine delivers. Whilst Hans Kleefeld famously designed the corporate TD shield (logo/symbol) in 1969, it is unknown if he had any involvement in The Green machine wordmark.
