A short book designed to help students of English improve their ability to critically evaluate literature. The author asserts “that reading in depth is as necessary and valuable as reading in breadth.” The book is printed in black ink only on a linen textured stock, and set in Univers.

This ability to interrogate and better understand the different facets of a text is illustrated by the cover image. A complex process is transformed into an accessible one, without ever attempting to dumb it down or deny its complexity. Concentric circles are used to concentrate attention on specific points (and points within points), and the decision to use different arrow styles adds richness and variety while remaining focussed on the key topics. The subtitle and author’s credit is rotated and set within the main title to further amplify the interrogative nature of the book.
