Produced by the design team within COJO (Olympic Games Organizing Committee) as one in a series of posters promoting the 1976 games. It uses the familiar silver and rainbow band colour scheme as a backdrop for technical elevations of the centrepiece of the games’ official infrastructure — French architect Roger Taillibert’s Olympic Stadium. Nicknamed ‘The Big O’ (and, less kindly, ‘The Big Owe’) the stadium was not finally completed until long after the Games had finished, and is widely considered both an icon of the city and a huge white elephant (that in 2018 still lacks a main tenant). It remains the largest stadium by seating capacity in Canada, and the tower (completed in 1987) is the world’s tallest inclined structure.
