The Metric Commission was a Government agency established in 1971 to facilitate Canada’s conversion to the metric system and in 1974 was launched nationally. From pre-launch, and thereafter annually, an official, bilingual report was issued in the area of planning and scheduling. The main purpose of these publications was to report on the activities of the 10 steering committees and the specific sectors in which they each represented. This report was the fourth such document.

The cover design takes Stuart Ash’s wonderful Metric Commission symbol and repeats it 4 times in incremental overlays (one for each report or year), transitioning from yellow through to red. Being produced in late fall, the colour palette and graphic composition further alludes to the metamorphosis seen in maple leaves during autumn. The text section is printed in black ink only on a very light paper stock and is primarily typographic with some full page images and charts within each chapter/section. Sadly due to the frailty of the glue in the document’s perfect binding, it has not been possible to share the inside spreads for fear of incurring permanent damage.
