Established in 1943, King Plastics were a company based in Mississauga, Ontario. They specialized in the importation and wholesale of sheet plastic materials, particularly within the signage and manufacturing industries. Gottschalk+Ash, Toronto helped the brand develop their corporate identity and print communications during the late 70s and throughout the 80s. G+A designer and partner, Tiit Telmet, oversaw this work.
Each year King commissioned G+A to produce their annual Christmas card. This edition, from 1981, comes in the form of a folded down mini-poster, which opens out to present the recipient with a festive display of geometric wonderment — spelling out the company’s name KING. The graphic forms reinforce the nature of the business, incorporating a sense of folded substrate (and the wrapping / unwrapping of presents), as well as an abstracted Santa Claus for good measure. Three ink colours are used across the piece, red and green, and silver which is used exclusively on the messaging, made up of 45º seasonal words , and the primary greeting along the base of the sheet.
