A reference title compiled by the Faculty of Mathematics, at the University of Waterloo, serving as a bibliography for a major title on Enumeration to be published by an Academic Press in 1977. The contents of the publication were obtained initially through all known papers on the subject and recorded, followed by acquiring new papers found after examining recent publications within other titles and journals. This process was repeated until no additional papers were identified. Only those papers pertaining to the enumerative uses of generating functions and the supporting combinatorial, algebraic and analytic techniques were selected. In addition to a listing of all papers alphabetically by authors, the references were also organized by key words and forward citations.
The design of this titles’ cover follows a similar process driven approach typographically presented by designer George W. Roth. This arresting arrangement of alphabetical bibliographic references are set on lines comprised of 3 weights of Helvetica and interspersed with italics, giving a kinetic energy running through the composition. The left-hand margin interestingly zig-zags to further enhance this approach, turning an otherwise dry and functional publication into a visual treat.
