A publication commissioned by the Ministry of Cultural Affairs in Quebec, produced to accompany an exhibition at the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal of non-figurative art by Provincial artists between 1955 and 1965.
The cover features an untitled work (1965, gouache on paper) by Denis Juneau, and uses the painting’s vibrant orange and deep contrasting black to great visual effect. Juneau was a leading figure of Canadian plasticien (hard edge) movement and part of the new wave of artists that Quebec produced in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Other featured artists include Claude Tousignant, Guido Molinari and Fernand Leduc.
