This annual publication provided a statistical view of the country, broken down into a series of main topics: The Country, The People, The Economy, Natural Resources, Finance Trade & Industry and The Mass Media — an overview of life in Canada. 1971 saw the publication of the 40th edition, coordinated by the Dominion Bureau of Statistics (now Statistics Canada).

The cover design illustrates the variety of subjects covered in the book, using a selection of photographic images reproduced in a range of single colours that overlay each other to create a snapshot of the nation.
