An auscultation is a diagnostic procedure that involves listening to sounds (in this case from the heart), typically with a stethoscope. This vinyl recording of such sounds is accompanied by expert analysis and provided for medical professionals.

This is a previous version of “The Art of Heart Auscultation” designed by Rolf Harder in 1970 (also in the Canada Modern permanent collection). Produced entirely in French, Ernst takes a much more direct route that feels indicative of his purist approach, overlaying a technical illustration of a human heart with waveforms from the recording. One of Design Collaborative’s earlier commissions.
