In 1969, the Government of Ontario, under the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, established the Ontario Apple Marketing Commission (OAMC). Previous to this, the initiative was known as the Apple Marketing Board. The primary role of OAMC was to regulate the marketing of apples in interprovincial and export trade. It was also responsible for the issue of licences to apple growers, and to establish minimum prices at which graded and packed apples from Ontario may be sold to wholesalers and to retail. During the late 1970s the commission created a new logo which incorporated the Ontario Government trillium symbol, housed within a red apple (sans superelljpse).

This button badge was produced to promote the commission’s mission, worn by growers, commission representatives, and given out as merchandise to the public. The core marketing statement, ‘Ask for Ontario Apples’ accompanies the (adorable) OAMC logo. All typography is set in Helvetica, the official typeface for the Ontario government at the time.

The Ontario government dissolved the Apple Marketing Commission in 2001 after almost 60% of growers voted to terminate it. In 2004 a new organizational body was established, called the Ontario Apple Growers.
