Ernst Roch was a passionate collector of Inuit art, and published this important volume under the Signum press imprint in collaboration with the Oxford University Press. Signum Press was owned and operated by Ernst Roch and Rolf Harder (Design Collaborative), providing them with an opportunity to design and contribute to numerous books.
This 240-page hardcover book includes over a hundred prints, all reproduced in their original colours and supported by descriptions and artist profiles, together with two supporting texts. Bound in green cloth with silver titles, the dustjacket features an iconic print – “The Woman Who Lives in the Sun” by Kenojuak Ashevak, who was sometimes described as “the Grand Dame of Kinngait”.
Prior to this book, Ernst had co-published and co-designed another, dedicated to the life and work of Pitseolak Ashoona, one of the most prolific Inuit artists. This book, called “Pitseolak: Pictures out of my life” was made into a film in 1971 by the National Film Board.
