The Extension Department at the Art Gallery of Ontario was established in 1968 to replace the recently dissolved Art Institute of Ontario. The Institute had been created by many of the province’s leading galleries to support the increasing demand for circulating exhibitions, but was unable to sustain itself and so the role was taken over by the AGO.
This catalogue lists all of the exhibitions for that year that were available for associated galleries to book, together with further details on the work presented within each exhibition. The cover features the word ‘art’ designed in a compositionally dynamic form, giving a stronger sense of movement as the work travels around the Province to reach new audiences. In its structure and detail it presents the Department as a well organized and professionally run operation, as well as the obvious artistic representation of the execution.
